Provinsi Papua memiliki sumberdaya hayati yang sangat tinggi dan beragam dan dapat dijumpai di berbagai tipe ekosistem mulai dari terumbu karang, estuaria, rawa, danau, savana, dataran rendah, dataran tinggi sampai ke daerah alpin. Dari sebaran tipe ekosistem tersebut membuat sumber daya hayatinya menjadi spesifik dan unik. Menurut perkiraan para ahli, Papua memiliki sekurang-kurangnya 11.000-20.000 jenis tumbuhan pembuluh, 191 jenis mamalia, 346 jenis reptilia dan amphibi, 552 jenis burung, 151 jenis ikan air tawar, dan diperkirakan 300.000 jenis serangga.
Sebagai bentuk tata kelola pemanfaatan tumbuhan dan satwa liar sebagaimana tercantum dalam Keputusan Menteri Kehutanan Nomor 447/KPTS-II/2003 tentang Tata Usaha Pengambilan atau Penangkapan dan Peredaran Tumbuhan dan Satwa Liar, Balai Besar Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam (BBKSDA) Papua berkewajiban untuk melakukan pembinaan dan koordinasi bersama para pihak terkait mengenai tata kelola pemanfaatan tumbuhan dan satwa liar. Oleh karenanya, BBKSDA mengadakan diskusi terfokus (FGD) pada tanggal 24 Oktober 2023 di Kota Jayapura. Acara tersebut dibuka oleh Kepala BBKSDA Papua, A.G Martana, S.Hut,.MH., dan dihadiri oleh para pihak terkait dengan pemanfaatan dan peredaran tumbuhan dan satwa liar, termasuk: Balai Karantina Pertanian Kelas 1 Jayapura, Polda Papua, TNI AL, Angkasa Pura Jayapura, PT. Pelindo Jayapura, Dinas Kehutanan dan Lingkungan Hidup Papua, Kejaksaan Negeri Jayapura, Pangdam XVII Cenderawasih, Kepala Kepolisian Daerah Papua, Pengadilan Tinggi Jayapura, Komandan Lantamal Jayapura, serta mitra pembangunan Provinsi Papua termasuk FORCLIME. Tujuan FDG ini adalah untuk:
1. Meningkatkan koordinasi bersama para pihak dalam meningkatkan efektivitas pengawasan dan pengendalian peredaran tumbuhan dan satwa liar, baik keluar maupun masuk ke Provinsi Papua.
2. Tercapainya kesepahaman bersama terkait penanganan dan pencegahan peredaran tumbuhan dan satwa liar secara ilegal.
Hasil dari FGD ini adalah Deklarasi Papua yang berisi komitmen lintas para pihak dalam mendukung penanganan jaringan ilegal peredaran tumbuhan dan satwa liar di Provinsi Papua.

FORCLIME memiliki komitmen untuk meningkatkan kapasitas pendamping kehutanan dan kelompok tani hutan mendorong praktik pengelolaan usaha kehutanan yang efektif dan berkelanjutan. Rangkaian pelatihan dan pendampingan pengembangan usaha bagi kelompok tani hutan (KTH) dampingan telah dilakukan sejak tahun 2022 hingga akhir tahun 2023 di tiga provinsi wilayah kerja FORCLIME, yaitu Papua, Sulawesi Tengah, dan Papua Barat Daya dan telah terlaksana dengan baik dan sukses.
Untuk bertukar pengetahuan dan pengalaman antar KTH dan fasilitator kehutanan yang telah mengikuti pelatihan pengembangan usaha, FORCLIME bersama PT SIMS dan RIWANI GLOBE, mitra-mitra pendamping pelatihan, mengadakan sesi berbagi pembelajaran secara daring pada tanggal 20 Oktober 2023. Kegiatan tersebut dibuka dan dipandu oleh Manajer FORCLIME bidang pengembangan kapasitas SDM, bapak Edy Marbyanto. Peserta kegiatan ini adalah KTH dan fasilitator kehutanan dari ketiga provinsi tersebut diatas, 50% dari peserta adalah perempuan (22 orang).
“Kami berharap pendampingan ini akan berlanjut, karena kami masih butuh dukungan untuk pengembangan usaha”, kata Muhammad Azis, pendamping Kelompok Usaha Perhutanan Sosial (KUPS) di Provinsi Sulawesi Tengah.
Saat ini, FORCLIME sedang menyusun rencana kegiatan pendampingan lanjutan yang akan dilaksanakan hingga FORCLIME 4.0 berakhir pada tahun 2024.

FORCLIME memulai program magang bagi mahasiswa di Tanah Papua pada tahun 2019, saat itu melibatkan 14 mahasiswa yang berasal dari Universitas Papua (UNIPA) dan Universitas Cenderawasih (UNCEN). FORCLIME kemudian melanjutkan program magang tersebut pada tahun 2020, 2021 dan 2022. Hingga tahun 2022, total siswa yang telah mengikuti program ini berjumlah 40 orang.
Tahun ini FORCLIME menyelenggarakan program magang bagi tujuh mahasiswa dari empat universitas di Tanah Papua, yakni Universitas Papua, Universitas Cenderawasih, Universitas Ottow Geissler Papua dan Universitas Musamus.
Seperti tahun-tahun sebelumnya, seluruh peserta magang terlebih dahulu mengikuti lokakarya pengenalan (introduction workshop) yang bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan khususnya terkait dengan penyelenggaraan program yang dilaksanakan GIZ, termasuk FORCLIME dan berbagai kegiatannya, isu-isu prioritas yang berkaitan dengan pembangunan kehutanan dan berbagai isu lain yang mencakup SDGs dan pengarusutamaan gender. Lokakarya pengenalan dilakukan secara hybrid dan diadakan selama lima jam sehari dari tanggal 12 – 18 Oktober 2023. Setelah lokakarya, para peserta magang akan ditempatkan dan dilibatkan dalam kegiatan proyek yang sedang berlangsung dan akan diberi tugas khusus yang mencakup kegiatan lapangan yang berhubungan dengan inventarisasi hutan, survei sosial ekonomi dan berbagai kegiatan penyuluhan. Melalui kegiatan ini para peserta magang diharapkan mendapatkan pengalaman praktis bekerja di sektor kehutanan. Sebagai tugas akhir, peserta magang akan mempresentasikan hasil magangnya sebagai bagian dari laporan magangnya.
