To support sustainable gender mainstreaming in national development goals, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) is working with stakeholders to continue to step up efforts and implement strategies for incorporating gender mainstreaming into the forestry and environment sectors.

This includes providing gender mainstreaming (PUG) training and information for policymakers. The objective is to integrate gender components into the development agenda and government institutions’ capacity-building activities. This is in line with the Government of Indonesia’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 5 on gender equality. Implementation of gender mainstreaming will contribute to reducing gaps in access, participation, control, and development benefits between women and men.

To make information more readily available, MoEF launched the Gender Mainstreaming Learning System (SRAGEN) at the end of March 2021. SRAGEN is a digital platform consisting of various policy documents, learning material, activities and agendas to support gender mainstreaming. Information is disseminated through MoEF’s Gender Mainstreaming website, http://pug.menlhk.go.id/, and its social media channels, such as YouTube (insert link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAbI7LKONGixYlSveodH6aA), Instagram and Twitter (@gender_klhk). This ensures that both internal and external stakeholders of MoEF can easily access gender-related information.

MoEF’s development partners are supporting its goal to integrate gender mainstreaming components into policies, planning, programme implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Its partners include the Forests and Climate Change Programme (FORCLIME) and Climate Smart Land Use in ASEAN (CSLU) project – which are funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH – as well as various other institutions such as the Multistakeholder Forestry Programme Phase 4 (MFP4).

The Coordination and Communication Forum of Lore Lindu Biosphere Reserve, supported by FORCLIME, conducted a coordination meeting on 3 March 2021 in Palu, Central Sulawesi. The meeting discussed implemented activities and follow up plans, particularly related to promoting sustainable products including the environmental services from the biosphere reserve. The meeting, which opened by the Head of BAPPEDA (local development planning agency) as the Chairman of the Coordination and Communication Forum, attended by 25 participants representing provincial government officials and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) members.

The Head of BAPPEDA, Mr. Faizal Mang, said on the meeting that a better quality and promotion will improve marketing and price of products and services, which then will lead to increase income and reduce poverty. Branding biosphere product as sustainable product will be contributed to that. Furthermore, he said the Coordination and Communication Forum, supported by GIZ, will facilitate to improve quality and promotion of products from the biosphere reserve.

As the follow up from the meeting, the Forum will develop a database of products and services that already put the biosphere logo on their products to avoid misuse of the logo that currently happened. In the meantime, SMEs that intend to put the Biosphere logo have to register. In addition, the Forum will enlist the Biosphere logo to the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights for property rights purposes. Furthermore, the meeting also agreed to review the current management plan and will develop 2025 Lore Lindu Biosphere Reserve roadmap.

The West Kalimantan REDD+ working group, supported by FORCLIME, developed a Concept Note for funding from the Global Climate Funding (GCF), which was submitted on December 2020 with title “To strengthen the provincial mitigation action to support national climate change target and a jurisdictional approach in REDD+”.
Aiming to response the feedback from the GCF Secretariat related to submitted Concept Note, the West Kalimantan Forestry Service conducted a meeting on 23 February 2021 in Pontianak, West Kalimantan. The meeting that attended by representatives from academics, local NGOs and provincial government officials discussed about issues related to peatland and mangrove management, as well as climate change adaptation, to be added on the Concept Note revision. Results from this meeting will be discussed during the meeting with the Secretariat of GCF on 26 February 2021.
