One of the activities set out under the FORCLIME 4.0 Strategic Plan is support for the development of sago and massoi commodities alongside the Environmental and Forestry Research and Development Center (Balai Litbang LHK) in Manokwari through agroforestry programs and assistance in pilot villages. In line with these goals, the FORCLIME Team held a coordination meeting with Balai Litbang LHK on 21 June 2021 in Manokwari, West Papua. The meeting was also attended by representatives from the Planning Bureau of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
During the meeting, several potential collaborations as regards the implementation of FORCLIME 4.0 activities were discussed, including involvement from NGOs and the private sector, as well as support for the dissemination of research results produced by Balai Litbang LHK Manokwari. As a follow-up, the FORCLIME team in West Papua will coordinate with the West Papua Forestry Service, the Tambrauw Production Forest Management Unit (KPHP) and the South Sorong KPHP in order to identify potential pilot villages and commodities.
“The presence of FORCLIME within West Papua is an honor for us and we want to work together in order to support programmes that will be implemented across West Papua,” explained Mr Pudja Mardi Utomo, Researcher at Balai Litbang LHK Manokwari.

As a part of efforts aimed at the preparation of vocational programmes, especially for Forestry Vocational High Schools (SMK Forestry), FORCLIME recently conducted an online discussion session with another German cooperation program, specifically Innovation and Investment for Inclusive Sustainable Economic Development (ISED) Project II. The session was held on 06 July 2021. One of the focuses of the ISED Project is the development of vocational education programmes aimed at the development of a competent workforce. In addition, ISED is also working to develop private sector participation in relation to economic development and employment.
The results of the discussion session can be broken down as follows:
1. It was suggested that a forestry labour-market survey should be implemented within both the public and the private sectors. The results of this survey should prove useful and suggest directions for Forestry Vocational Schools, universities and education and training institutions in terms of the development of future programmes.
2. It was suggested that link-and-match activities between Forestry Vocational Schools and users (companies) should be included in curriculum and session planning.
3. It was suggested that Internal Quality Management within Forestry Vocational Schools should be developed in order to ensure the quality of the relevant education services.
4. It was suggested that School Committees be strengthened through the involvement of ‘users’ (i.e. private-sector players) and should become a forum for discussions aimed at enhancing the development of schools.
5. It was suggested that soft skills be integrated into learning programmes offered by SMK Forestry.
6. It was suggested that a network of Forestry Vocational Schools be developed at the ASEAN level as a forum of joint learning between schools in different ASEAN countries.
Outputs from the discussion are set to be discussed at a meeting with the Forestry Vocational School that will aim to formulate a set of concrete activities and policies that will take account of these various issues.

FORCLIME will continue its internship programme for university students in Tanah Papua, including Cenderawasih University, as previously implemented during 2019. During the 2019 internship programme, eight final year students from Cenderawasih University took part in the FORCLIME programme and were placed in FORCLIME working areas in Kalimantan (west, east and north), Palu, Bogor and Jakarta. In an effort to prepare an activity plan, FORCLIME and Cenderawasih University held a joint meeting on 23 June 2021 in Jayapura City, Papua. This internship programme, which is similar to a thematic community service programme (KKN), is expected to provide students with work experience and knowledge relating to the FORCLIME 4.0 programme, while interns will be posted in line with their various interests. The university will propose several candidates for the programme who will then be selected by FORCLIME.
‘This internship programme is very useful for students looking to broaden their knowledge and work experience. Indeed, two students majoring in Geophysics have already completed internships that relate to mapping at FORCLIME and are proving very helpful on campus,’ explained Dr Yusuf Bungkang, Head of the Physics Study Program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Cenderawasih University.
