Peat Forest Education Involves 150 Participants

World Biodiversity Day 2016

To commemorate World Biodiversity Day 2016, GIZ Bioclime, in collaboration with the Mapala nature club from Raden Fatah State Islamic University in Palembang, the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), Animals ID, and the Sriwijaya University Postgraduate Program, held a biodiversity education event for the people of Palembang on Sunday, 29 May 2016 in Kambang Iwak Family Park in Palembang. One of the themes was saving peat forests. Activities aimed to raise community awareness of the degradation to peat forests in South Sumatra caused by forest fires, which the presenters hoped would encourage community members in efforts to save peat forests by restoring them, stopping illegal tree felling, and maintaining water supplies on peatlands.
