The Papua Provincial Forestry and Environment Service (Dinas LHK) held a coordination meeting with FORCLIME that addressed social forestry development within Papua Province on 18 August 2021. During the online meeting, the Head of Forest Rehabilitation and Social Forestry for Dinas LHK, Fredinan Rumbino, set out the various opportunities and challenges relating to social forestry development within the Province of Papua. The meeting participants also discussed what actions needed to be taken in order to promote sustainable forest management within Papua. One such action involves the revitalisation of the Social Forestry Working Group (Pokja PS), which will involve FORCLIME support. In this regard, the meeting participants agreed to draw up a set of strategic steps for the revitalisation of Pokja PS. Said steps will include the fostering of cooperation with other development partners, coordination with the Center for Social Forestry and Environmental Partnerships within the regions of Maluku and Papua, and the preparation of academic manuscripts that address the recognition of customary territories within Papua.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry, through its Directorate of Forest Resources Inventory and Monitoring (IPSDH) at the Directorate-General of Forestry Planning and Environmental Management, held a meeting in order to discuss and solicit input in relation to the draft version of the Technical Bamboo Inventory Guidelines for forest management units (KPH) on 24 August 2021. The meeting, which was conducted both online and offline, was chaired by the Head of the Forest Inventory Department, Ms Nurhayati.

The formulation of the Technical Bamboo Inventory Guidelines is one of the targets set under the National Strategy for Integrated Bamboo Development. Through the implementation of this strategy and framework, it is hoped that a sustainable supply of raw materials will be guaranteed (in terms of both volumes and quality). The Directorate of IPSDH, supported by GIZ, has been working on the new guidelines since 2019 and has allowed other relevant stakeholders to participate in the process.

In the wake of this discussion, another follow-up meeting with the Forest Research Center at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry has been scheduled at which other related stakeholders will further review the draft. A final draft version of the new guidelines is expected to be completed by the end of September 2021.

After successful implementations in 2019 and 2020, this year, FORCLIME is set to continue its internship programme. Coordination meetings organised in order to prepare for the implementation of this internship programme were held with representatives from Cenderawasih University (13 August 2021) in Papua and Papua University (19 August 2021) in West Papua. The implementation of the internship program will be synergized with the health and forest conservation programme for communities in and around forests in an effort to harmonize human health and forest health within Tanah Papua. The program is currently in its preparatory stage that encompasses a feasibility study involving interns from the Papua and Cenderawasih universities. The selection process for apprentices is carried out by each university with facilitation being provided by the FORCLIME team in Papua and West Papua. After the selection, six students from the University of Papua and four from the University of Cenderawasih will participate in the FORCLIME internship programme and engage in a feasibility study for a forest conservation-based public health programme that will be implemented by the Alam Lestari Foundation (ASRI). This activity will be carried out in Jayapura Regency (Papua Province) and Tambrauw Regency (West Papua Province), while the results of the feasibility study will determine the type of programme that will ultimately be implemented, which will relate to conservation-based health services through a consideration of the socio-cultural characteristics of the local community. It is expected that students will be able to commence their internships in October 2021.
