Following on from work started last year, the West Kalimantan Provincial Government continues s improving the project concept note for climate change financing to the Green Climate Fund (GCF). Together with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry on the 10 November 2020 they collaborated to build synergy in an emission reduction programme, additionally, the meeting also aimed to obtain national direction for the proposed project.

Led by the Regional Secretary of the West Kalimantan Province, Mr. AL. Leysandri, the team consisted of the Head of the Environment and Forestry Service, economists and the REDD+ Working Group and was received directly by the Director General of Climate Change Management, Dr. Ruandha Agung Sugardiman. He was accompanied by the Director of Sectoral and Regional Resource Mobilization and the Director of Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Monitoring Verification. During the meeting the team from West Kalimantan presented on the progress of the concept note that had been reviewed by the Secretariat of the National Designated Authority of the Green Climate Fund Indonesia.

The Directorate General of Climate Change Control supports the initiatives and efforts undertaken by the West Kalimantan Provincial Government, through the REDD+ Working Group with GIZ as Accredited Entities, to obtain alternative climate change financing as a sub-national contribution in achieving the national targets for emission reduction as stipulated in the National Determined Contribution.

Aiming to support the development of human resources at the forest management unit in South Sorong (KPH Sorong Selatan) in West Papua Province, four FORCLIME interns who are also alumni of the Faculty of Forestry, State University of Papua conducted an interview to identify needed trainings (IKD) at the KPH Sorong Selatan on 27th – 30th October 2020. The purpose of this activity was to identify the competency development needs for every staff member of KPH Sorong Selatan. This will hopefully lead to developing a training plan to facilitate improved competency for all staff members and help them conduct their duties in a more professional way.

Data collection for IKD was carried out using questionnaires, interviews, as well as using secondary data. Interviews and meetings were all carried out complying with existing coronavirus pandemic health protocols. In general, data collection was conducted smoothly due to good support from the Head and staff of KPH Sorong Selatan. One constraint faced during data collection was a shortage of personnel from the West Papua Province Forestry Service because they are not currently present at the office on a regular basis as the agency is implementing a work from home policy due to the pandemic. To overcome this additional data collection will be carried out by appointed KPH Sorong Selatan personnel. Following the completion of gathering data, the IKD team, supported by the FORCLIME Technical Adviser, will analyse the data and develop a report.

"Looking at the history of forest and land fires in Indonesia, they are mainly influenced by human factors rather than natural ones , so efforts to prevent forest and land fires should be prioritized over extinguishing efforts," said the Director General of Climate Change, Ministry of Environment and Forestry on his opening speech at the Final Workshop of FORCLIME II Fire Management on 26-27 October 2020.

The FORCLIME II Fire Management was implemented in KPH (forest management unit) Kubu Raya, West Kalimantan from 2017 to mid-2020. The programs achievements were conveyed at the final workshop, with the topic of Sharing Experiences in Integrated Forest Fire Prevention Efforts. Additionally, the Head of the Environment and Forestry Service of West Kalimantan Province launched the new Guidelines for the Implementation of Fire Management at the FMU Level in West Kalimantan Province. The workshop was conducted in collaboration with the Directorate General of Climate Change of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and the Provincial Government of West Kalimantan and was supported by FORCLIME.
