In an effort to support capacity building and the development of conservation partnerships in the KPHK Cycloop – Youtefa area, it will be necessary to determine a number of pilot villages as the target of joint program interventions implemented by FORCLIME and the Center for Conservation and Natural Resources (BBKSDA) Papua. In order to achieve this goal, FORCLIME carried out a survey in order to identify potential villages suitable to receive support in conjunction with KPHK Cycloop – Youtefa managers from 3 - 6 November 2021. Among the villages surveyed were Dosay, Tablasupa, Doyobaru, Maribu, Buper Waena and Bayangkara, all of which are located in the district of Jayapura.

The data and information collected during these field visits related to the location and accessibility of the relevant areas, potential non-timber forest products, environmental services, local community wisdom and traditions relating to forest management, demographics and community institutions, and the presence of Forest Farmers Groups in each village.

Much interesting knowledge relating to local wisdom was discovered during the survey. For example, the people of the village of Tablasupa recognize 15 types of landscapes as a part of their daily lives, specifically: morewai (rivers), sero (mountains), meko (hills), yoo sena (old villages), yoo (villages), burou (springs), dukuru (bays), buman (estuaries), pau (valleys), nau (seas), sensori (lakes), boru (stone beaches), yemo (capes), yepa (sand beaches) and sekere (coral). Moreover, in Tablasupa, people are not allowed to build houses on the sea, beaches or headlands, while all fishing catches must be divided up among the local clans by the Ondoafi (the highest leader in the village).

Based on the results of this identification activity, FORCLIME will consult with BBKSDA Papua. The results of these discussions will then become the basis for the determination of joint pilot villages and the formulation of activities within said villages.

As a part of efforts aimed at supporting business development among Forest Management Units (KPH) and Forest Farmers Groups (KTH), FORCLIME, working in collaboration with the Centre for Forest Education and Training (Pusdiklat) at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF), held a training session on the online marketing of forestry products in Makassar back in 2019. At a subsequent post-training evaluation held in 2021, participants affirmed that during the session they had acquired basic knowledge and training in the marketing of forest products produced by KPHs and KTHs.

As a follow-up to this training in online marketing, Pusdiklat and FORCLIME organized a Training in Digital Marketing course from 17 - 18 November 2021. Around 510 participants attended the first day’s session, while 195 were present on the second day. The material delivered during the first day encompassed basic knowledge of this topic, as well as architecture and the selection of digital marketing platforms. The second day’s session focused on digital marketing strategies, product strategies (from products to customers) and marketing strategies (from customers to products). Prior to the end of the two-day session, participants were tasked with creating an account on a given platform and with the marketing of products produced by each KPH and KTH.

“This training proved very useful, even though the training schedule was very tight, as only two days had been allotted for this course. I hope similar training will continue to be offered in the future, as the material presented has been very useful,” explained Dullah Adi, one of the participants from the Pekanbaru Forest Farmers Group.

Given that setting up and expanding a KTH business is a highly dynamic process, the Pusdiklat is now planning to develop a training package on the online marketing of forestry products. Moreover, the previous training curriculum on online marketing, as well as the post-training evaluation results, will be used as a reference during the development of this new training curriculum in online marketing.

As a follow-up to this training in digital marketing, the Pusdiklat will continue to undertake field visits to eight pilot FMUs spread across Indonesia.

The province of Papua has established a Working Group on Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Deforestation and Forest and Land Degradation (Pokja REDD) and is currently in the stages of establishing a secretariat, selecting personnel, developing activities and proposing financing for the project. As the focal point of Pokja REDD, the Papua Province Forestry and Environment Service (DKLH) needs the support and cooperation of all of the relevant parties in terms of initiating Pokja's operations, including exchanges of knowledge with other provinces that have undergone similar experiences. As a result, FORCLIME decided to organise a study visit to West Kalimantan for DKLH Papua and related parties in order to explore forestry issues and learn about the working system of the REDD+ Working Group in West Kalimantan.

The visit was held from 22 - 27 November 2021 and saw participation from representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the Papua Province DKLH, the Papua Province Regional Development Planning Agency, the University of Cenderawasih and the Natural Resources Conservation Centers (BBKSDA) in Papua and West Papua. Participants arrived in Pontianak on Sunday, 21 November 2021 and were greeted by the Head of the Environment and Forestry Service (DLHK) for West Kalimantan Province, Ir. H. Adiyani, MH, before a visit to the Equator Monument, which is one of Pontianak’s best-known landmarks.

During the study visit, the participants held discussions with their West Kalimantan partners about the activities being implemented by the REDD+ Working Group, as well as forest management initiatives being run by various parties, including communities, universities, customary forests and forest management units (KPHs). The participants also visited KPH Kubu Raya in Rasau Jaya Village, which was the location of the previous phase of FORCLIME activities. The participants also received information on forest-fire prevention programmes at the site level, including land clearance without burning, the development of productive plantation businesses on peatlands and the practice of making wood acid (a liquid substance that is produced through the precisely controlled pyrolysis of biomass).

‘This study visit has been useful as it supports my work, particularly as it relates to forestry development planning within Papua Province, the establishment of a REDD+ working group and strategies for the protection of the environment and forests and that involve the combining of the livelihoods of local communities living around the forest,’ explained Dr. Estiko Tri Wiradyo, a representative of the Forestry and Environment Service of Papua Province.

During the study visit, participants also visited the Gunung Palung National Park Office in Ketapang and the Alam Sehat Lestari Foundation (ASRI) in Sukadana, where they were addressed by various relevant parties and got to observe firsthand the health and conservation programmes being implemented by ASRI within the Gunung Palung National Park area. A similar programme is set to be implemented by ASRI within Papua. A feasibility study is currently being carried out, supported by FORCLIME, which will gather information on the best location for the implementation of a health and conservation programme within Tanah Papua. This programme will ultimately be developed by ASRI.
