The West Kalimantan Provincial Forestry Service together with FORCLIME conducted a discussion on development of the non-timber forest product (NTFP) light-red meranti (tengkawang) on 16-17 July 2019 in Pontianak, West Kalimantan. The meeting aimed to consolidate and build a wider network to introduce products, share experiences in the production process and promote products that are produced by the community. There were 65 participants representing various agencies, including the government, private, academic and community representatives of several villages in Kapuas Hulu District (Mensiau, Labian, Labian Iraang, Nanga) and Sahan Village (Bengkayang Regency).
The exchange of information about the demand for tengkawang products, especially tengkawang butter, and the tengkawang butter trade mechanism were the main topics during the meeting. Participants were divided into three groups, each of which discussed: tengkawang protection policies, increased economic value through improved production processes and marketing of Tengkawang products and networks.
In addition, participants also agreed to accelerate the online non-timber forest product licensing services, as well as expanding the Tengkawang Network that was proposed to be defined through a governor's decree.
FORCLIME had supported the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) to conduct a followup training on radar-based burned area mapping using the European radar satellite Sentinel-1 of which the data is available free of charge. This training is one of FORCLIME’s efforts in forest fire prevention. 15 participants from the MoEF [(Directorates of Forest Resources Inventory and Monitoring, the Bogor training centre-Pusdiklat LHK)]; the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space-LAPAN; participated in the 3-day training on 22-24 July 2019 in Sentul (West Java) to learn about Sentinel-1/SAR/SNAP principles, practical processes, classification of radar data, accuracy assessment and how a radar-based burned area product can be integrated with a burned area map based on optical data.
Radar-based burned area products can improve the ability to detect burned areas and complement the burned area map based on optical Landsat data produced by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. Radar data are almost weather independent and can penetrate clouds and smoke which pose the main limitations for the availability of optical satellite images.
The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) through its technical directorates (Forest and Land Fire Control-PKHL; and Inventory and Monitoring of Forest Resources-IPSDH) in collaboration with FORCLIME conducted a training on Operating Drones for Mapping of Forest and Land Fires on 16-17 July 2019 in Pontianak, West Kalimantan. The training, aimed at obtaining more accurate and valid data and was attended by 24 representatives from the West Kalimantan Provincial Forestry Office, DAOPS Manggala Agni, Kubu Raya Forest Management Unit (KPH Kubu Raya) and the KLHK’s technical implementation units in West Kalimantan.
On his remarks, the Director of Forest and Land Fire Control stated that the participants were expected to spread the knowledge and skills acquired during the training to others.
During the training the participants gained knowledge about: (1) How to use drones; (2) Regulations regarding the operation of drones; (3) Validation of hotspots vs burnt areas; (4) Merging of drone data or field data; (5) flight planning; (6) Image processing of burnt areas; and (7) Drone data processing results. On the second day, the participants practiced flying drones and processing data for mapping.
