In order to accelerate the operationalization of Forest Management Units (FMU) in Indonesia, FORCLIME facilitated a training for forestry academicians to become experts who can support the development of FMU in different regions. In line with the training, the participants established RAKI (Rumah Akademisi Kehutanan Indonesia), a group of experts that are expected to become the ‘think tank’ for future FMU development in Indonesia.
So far, trainings have been conducted in Yogyakarta and Mataram for Region 2 (Java, Bali and Nusa Tenggara), in Ambon for Region 4 (Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua) and in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan for Region 3 (all Kalimantan provinces).

During the training the lead trainer, Dr. Agus Setyarso, emphasized the specific characteristics of each individual FMU and the need to set up locally adapted management structures.

RAKI’s members show continuous commitment to support the process of FMU operationalization, for instance by establishing a FMU Consultation Centre, which is part of the Centre for Sustainable Tropical Forest Management at the University of Lambung Mangkurat in South Kalimantan. The FMU Consultation Centre has the following tasks:
1.    to provide advice to Heads of FMUs on FMU operationalization and management,
2.    to conduct trainings in the framework of human resource development as required by FMUs,
3.    to recruit and empower experts to manage the FMU.
