Staff members of the two Forest Management Units (FMU) Berau Barat and Gularaya, together with representatives from Forest Area Consolidation Center (Balai Pemantapan Kawasan Hutan - BPKH) in Samarinda, Pontianak and Palu as well as representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry have discussed with experts from the University of Göttingen/ Forest Eye Research, Germany, about the revision of the guideline for forest inventory on FMU level.

The training, which took place from 09 to 13 November in Bogor, mainly focused on (i) the possibilities to increase the effectiveness of the inventory methodology while ideally reducing inventory costs, and on (ii) the identification of practical inventory objectives for FMUs including the clear formulation of an inventory’s purpose.

The first day of discussions was followed by three practical training days. The technical training covered several topics, from Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and data managment to Remote Sensing. The training was supplemented with a field trip to a nearby forest area where the participants were introduced to a range of forest mensuration devices and techniques.
