As part of developing educational and work opportunities for Papuan and West Papuan students, GIZ Indonesia provided an opportunity for Cenderawasih University and Papua University students to undertake an internship from June – October 2019 in the Forests and Climate Change Program (FORCLIME) – a bilateral cooperation programme between the Indonesian and German governments. After completing the internship, the student interns were given the opportunity to conduct research in Tanah Papua (land of Papua) and the results were presented in a webinar series.

The first series of webinars was held on July 9, 2020, with the topics:

  • Utilization of non-timber forest products by communities in the Keerom sub-watershed area, Keerom Regency by Cheny Adetyaningsih (Cenderawasih University student);
  • Analysis of vegetation and estimation of carbon stocks in the Irier protected forest area, Sarmi Regency by Sammaria Julia Karma (Cenderawasih University student).

More than 55 people joined the webinar series, including representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry at the centre (Planning Bureau) and technical implementing units in Papua Province (BBKSDA, TN Wasur), West Papua Province (BP2LHK), East Kalimantan Province (BDLHK Samarinda); Forest Service and forest management units (Papua, West Kalimantan); NGOs; universities in Papua and West Papua (Cenderawasih, Papua, Ottow Geisller); RI-Germany cooperation programmes (APCC, SASCI).
