The ASEAN-GIZ project on Forestry and Climate Change (FORCC) and the bilateral German-Indonesian Forests and Climate Change Programme (FORCLIME) organized a regional workshop on Forest Governance and Land Tenure in West Nusa Tenggara Province on 15-19 May 2017. There were 35 participants in total representing several ASEAN countries, such as Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia and Thailand. Indonesia was represented by participants from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and stakeholders of organisations involved in conflict management in Indonesia, such as Conservation International (CI), Working Group Tenure (WGT), CIFOR, IMN, RECOFTC and the Kapuas Hulu Conflict Resolution Desk.

During the two-day workshop, a vivid exchange of best practices and lessons learned from participating countries took place. The Kapuas Hulu Conflict Resolution Desk – supported by FORCLIME – held a presentation about its organisation, which was followed by a lively discussion.

As part of the workshop, the participants visited a local conflict resolution case in a community in West Nusa Tenggara Province. The participants learned about the experiences the population of Rempek Village made in settling a conflict between the local government and the Forest Management Unit (FMU) of Rinjani Barat. The two-year mediation process of this case was documented in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and a notary document. The presenters highlighted the role of local NGOs and the Samantha Foundation as crucial for the positive outcome of this mediation process.

This workshop illustrates how synergies between GIZ projects and partners lead to the successful exchange of best practices and lessons learned between regional audiences.
