2019 12 10 Nursery Workshop.2 small

One of the tasks of the Forest Management Units (FMU) is to support the development of a better livelihood of the local farmers by means of involving them in sustainable forest management. Since agroforestry is a promising approach the provision of appropriate planting material or sometimes even introduction of new commodities is needed. Therefore, an important key requirement is the establishment and the sustainable management of a nursery to produce high-quality seedlings. To increase their capacity in tree seedling production FMU Kapuas Hulu Timur, supported by FORCLIME, conducted a training on the establishment and the management of tree nurseries. The two-day workshop was done from December 10th to 11th 2019 on site where the nursery should be built. Besides the FMU personnel, a number of local farmers was also participating.

After the opening, there was an interesting discussion on the needs and the potentials of the invited farmers see in their villages. The afternoon was filled with a presentation explaining considerations and preconditions for the establishment of a nursery. On the second day, a lesson on the management of a nursery followed and at the end of the workshop a practical exercise on preparing of growing media, building shading structures and irrigation of freshly planted seeds was implemented.
