Peat Depth and Carbon Stored

The MPDF is one of the largest peat domes in northern part of South Sumatra. A study conducted by Wetlands and IPB in 2003 revealed that the Merang and Kepahiyang Peat Swamp Forest (210 thousands Ha), with average peat depth of 150 cm, stored 0.5 gigaton of carbon. In 2006, SSFFMP conducted a 3D peat dome modelling based on peat drillings and DEM SRTM and resulted in 0.1 giga ton of carbon from 140 thousands ha with peat depth average of 208 cm (Mott, 2006). Another study to compile all peat dataset conducted in 2007, revealed that with the size of 125 thousand ha and peat depth average of 2,5 meters, the MPDF holds 0.2 giga ton of carbon or equivalent to 0.72 gigaton of CO2 (Ballhorn, 2007).
